When a mother told me she finally felt like someone was on her side after working with our Parent Aide mentor, I was reminded why prevention programs matter.
Financial stress, limited support networks, mental-health strains, and everyday pressures can push families to their breaking point. February’s Family Support Awareness Month reminds us that strong families aren’t built in isolation – they’re built through access to support and education that help parents navigate life’s hardest moments.
At Children’s Healing Institute, our mission is to build confident, capable parents through guidance, education, and advocacy to improve the lives of children. A core part of achieving that mission is our Parent Aide program, which gives parents weekly home visits with trained Parent Aides. These mentors meet families in their homes, helping them to enhance problem-solving skills, develop social supports, and understand their children’s needs. Mentors provide practical strategies, emotional support, and access to resources that help create long-lasting stability.
For many families, Parent Aide is the first time they’ve had someone listen without judgment and provide them with tools to create healthier routines and stronger parent-child relationships. The impact is tangible. Parents gain confidence, reduce stress, and improve their children’s well-being.
As our state leaders are meeting in Tallahassee for the legislative session, we urge them to keep prevention and family support programs in mind. These programs can help change the course Florida’s children and their future, and continued investment ensures we can provide this support to every family who can benefit from it. When lawmakers support prevention‑first initiatives, they strengthen family stability, reduce the need for crisis interventions, and create long‑term benefits for our state’s economic and social health.
Throughout our state, Florida’s child and family service providers are working to help families earlier and more effectively. Together with the Partners for Florida’s Children and Families, we advocate for prevention-focused solutions that keep children safe and supported, create stronger families, and build bridges to success.
Florida’s children deserve to grow up in strong families and have every opportunity to reach their full potential. As we recognize Family Support Awareness Month, let’s commit to investing in programs that give every family the support and resources they need to thrive.
